8.5/10 (i have to expand, this is one of the best new films i’ve seen in a long time! this movie is hilarious, creepy, romantic, awkward, engaging, suspenseful, and full of heart. i loved seeing jonah hill do something different, he can actually play a deep and intense character while still being totally balls-out funny. i was surprised. it’s tough to find films that can blend all these aspects but Cryus does it perfectly!)
A recently divorced guy meets the woman of his dreams. Then he meets her son.

anything/10 (Honestly, this movie is like Who’s Line is it Anyway. Everything’s made up and the points don’t matter. The points don’t matter because kids will love it without questioning. And the plot seems totally made up.)

Wings of Desire (or Der Himmel Uber Berlin, which roughly translates to Skies Over Berlin) is a German film (subtitled, with some English) which centers around the story of two angels wandering in a mixture of post-war and modern Berlin. Invisible to humans, they nevertheless give their help and comfort to all the lonely and depressed souls they meet. Finally, after many centuries, one of the angels becomes unhappy with his immortal state and wishes to become human in order to experience the joys of everyday life. He meets a circus acrobat and finds in her the fufillment of all his mortal desires. He also discovers a friend in Peter Falks character “The Filmstar”, who teaches him that a purely spiritual experience is not enough to satisfy anyone.
It was Peter Falks performance which caught my attention when I first watched this film. Yes, he is and always will be Columbo, but his character in this movie is deep, smart, and incredibly charming.
Not everyone can sit through Wings of Desire. It is as much a work of poetry as it is a work of cinema and every line is delivered as though it is a sacred piece of art. I love this film, I love that it features Nick Cave, and I love the dichotomy between black & white and color.
In honor of Peter Falks death, I am recommending this film to anyone who loves his work or who just enjoys a good foreign film. It is incredible. Find it, film lovers!
I will own the space next door to Tatters/Herkimers and turn it back into a cinema. I’ll replace the broken marquee and get big lights that say it’s name: “Royal Cinema.” Royal after my favorite movie, The Royal Tenebaums. Or maybe “Sunshine Cinema,” after Eternal Sunshine. And I will screen the best movies I can think of for really cheap. It will also have a stage so it could turn into a concert venue for any bands that I really like. I will make zero money off of the cinema, because people don’t appreciate good film, but it won’t matter because I’ll be so happy.

Turn off the sound, look away, count down till the video starts. I refuse to be a part of your advertising audience.
Anyway, Kanye, you’re not deep. Your sound is shallow and your attitude is ridiculous, but i can’t help but get DOWN. Did you really have to “take him to that ghetto university?” What’s the average GPA in that place? nonsense. (riri, i don’t blame you for this.)
Anyway, as my heroine Harriet M. Welsh would say “I can’t help it if I know what I like…” so here it is, my guilty pleasure….
